Trouble shooting guide.
The following instructions should answer any questions or problems which you may
have. Although your guarantee is with the retailer from whom you purchased the
appliance, should this guide not provide the information you require, please
call our
help-line direct for further guidance on your next course of action.
If you suspect that the appliance is not operating correctly:
1. Ensure that the fire is plugged into a wall socket.
2. Turn both switches on (by pushing the lower part of the switch) and ensure that the
thermostat wheel is set on 10 (Fully clockwise)
Symptom.
a) No heat or light.
•
Check that the wall socket is not faulty by using another appliance in it. Check fuse
b) Heat comes on but no light. The lamps will need replacing, see (replacing Lamp)
above.
First check that the new lamp works by testing it in a table lamp.
c) Light comes on but no heat. Are both switches on? If the fan blows warm for a
short time then blows cold it implies that the air intake and the blades of the fan need
cleaning, see (Cleaning) above.
d) Plug gets hot. It is nearly always the wall socket which is at fault. Check the fire in
another socket; it will not get as warm. Stop using the faulty socket immediately and
call an electrician. Many house fires are caused by faulty sockets overheating.
e) Lamps do not last very long. If the lamps do not last very long there is nothing
wrong with the fire. It is not possible to predict the life of a lamp, some burn out more
quickly than others.
f) Noise from the fan. Unfortunately there is always some noise from the fan. We do
our utmost to reduce this, but they will never be silent.
g) ‘Flame does not flicker’. Remove the fiberglass fuel bed see (replacing lamp).
Check that the spinners are not catching on anything. Remove the spinner and run a
blunt pencil around the inside of the plastic center cap (this deposits a little graphite
which acts a lubricant.) Sharpen the point of the pin with a piece of emery. If
necessary, re-shape the spinner by placing it upside down in a mug and gently
pushing the center downwards. Re-assemble before using the appliance.
Guarantee.
Any fault (other than that caused by abnormal treatment, or damage caused by leaving
the ashpan cover in front of the fire whilst the heater is on) which occurs within 12
months of the date of purchase, will be corrected free of charge. This does not apply to
lamp failures whose life, regretfully, we cannot predict. In the event of
complaint, please
phone us for guidance. Should a repair be necessary the appliance will need returning
to the place of purchase.
Unless specifically stated in these instructions, alterations to this product are not per-
mitted. Any alterations made, that are not specifically stated could potentially be un-
safe and will invalidate your guarantee. (This includes removal of the fitted plug).

Thank you very much for purchasing a Burley electric fire. Please spend a couple of
minutes reading these instructions before using the appliance; they are to ensure
your safety and convenience.
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS
When using electrical appliances, basic precautions should always be followed to
reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury to persons. These include the
following:
Installation
1.
Some appliances have ash pan covers to hide the heater and controls
when not in use. These covers must not be left in front of the heater outlet
when the fire is on Doing so could create a fire risk, it will cause the element .
to overheat and fail. Damage so caused is not covered by the guarantee.
2. Read all the instructions before using this heater.
3. Do not locate this heater immediately below a socket outlet.
4. Do not use this heater in the immediate surround of a bath, shower, or
swimming pool. Avoid any contact with water.
5. Do not cover this heater, or allow curtains etc. to obstruct the air inlet or outlet,
otherwise there is a risk of overheating or fire.
6. Do not lead the cable in front of the air outlet.
7. Do not trap the cable. Ensure that the fire is not standing on the cable.
8. Do not use the fire on an extension lead.
9. Do not permanently fix the appliance; it will need removing for servicing.
10. Parts of this heater are hot when in use. To avoid burns, do not touch hot sur-
faces
11. Do not run the cable under a carpet or rug etc. arranges cable away from traffic
areas and where it will not be tripped over.
12. Extreme caution and a guard is necessary when any heater is used near
children, the elderly or the infirm and whenever the heater is left operating and
unattended.
13. Do not use outdoors.
14. Do not operate any heater with a damaged cable or plug or after the heater
malfunctions, or after it has been dropped or damaged in any manner. Return
the appliance to an authorised service agent for examination and repair.
15. Do not insert or allow foreign objects to enter the appliance as this may cause
electric shock or fire, or damage the appliance.
16. This is an imitation coal and flame effect electric fire and must not be used as
a real fire.
17. Always unplug heater when not in use. To disconnect heater, turn controls off,
then remove plug from outlet.
18. A heater is hot and arcing or sparking parts inside. Do not use it in areas
where petrol, paint, or flammable liquids are used or stored.
19. Use this heater only as described in this manual. Any other use not
recommended by the manufacturer may cause fire, electric shock, or injury
to persons.
20. If your fire is to be installed in an open chimney, then the chimney must be
blocked off.
Leaving the chimney open can have a detrimental effect on the flame effect
and cause the heater to cut out and damage the fire.
Save these instructions
Commissioning your fire.
1. Remove the fibre glass shell.
2. The flame effect spinner(s) leave the factory fitted on the lamp holder brackets.
Carefully check that they are located on the pin above the lamp and spinning freely.
3. Replace the shell.
4. If your fire has a separate front casting, hook the bolts/nuts on the back of the front
into the slots. The nuts have been adjusted and locked in the correct position, do
not try and tighten them.
5. Arrange the coals by first placing thinner pieces down behind the cast basket or
front. Then build it up to cover the shell one piece of coal deep all over. If extra coal
is needed for any reason, it is perfectly acceptable to use normal washed household
coal.
6. Some models have slots cut into the fuel bed to cast a flicker up the back of the fire.
Experiment by positioning the coals so as to allow light through some of the
slots.
7. Position your fire taking note of the points listed above in "Installation."
Controls.
A. The switch marked 0-1 controls the lamp(s) and must be turned on before the
heater switch will operate.
B. The switch marked with 1 red bar starts the fan and gives full 2kW of heat in
conjunction with the thermostat
THERMOSTAT OPERATION
The heater is automatically controlled by a thermostat to regulate the room temperature.
The easiest way to set the thermostat to your level of comfort is as follows:
a. Turn the heater on. b. Leave the heater running until the room has reached your
desired comfortable temperature.
c. Slowly turn the thermostat down until it clicks and the heater stops.
d. The heater will now cycle on and off to keep the room at the chosen temperature.
Each time the heat is turned on, it will return the room to this preset temperature
and then start cycling on and off. Should you wish to raise or lower the room
temperature, i.e. during particularly cold spells, simply turn the thermostat up or down
accordingly. Note: The thermostat switches the heater fully on or fully off as the room
temperature fluctuates.
You do not get 30% of the heat when the dial is turned
30% of the way round and 70% when it is turned 70% of the way round.
Maintenance.
Warning: – Disconnect the fire from the power supply before undertaking any
maintenance.
1) Replacing lamps. Lift off the coals or pebbles carefully. Lift off the fibreglass shell.
Some models have the fibreglass shell secured with screws. These screws will need to
be removed. Replace spent lamps with a 40 watt candle lamp; these are available from
most electrical shops and supermarkets.
2) Cleaning - brass. All brass has been lacquered to prevent it from tarnishing; it will
only need dusting with a clean cloth. Do not use any polishes or abrasives as this will
destroy the protective surface. If you use a hearth cleaner or wash your hearth, remove
the fire prior to cleaning and replace when completely dry.
3) Cleaning – air intake grille and fan. The fan tends to attract atmospheric dust and
fluff which over time may restrict the air supply and cause the heater to cut out with a
small blue flash from the element. This is a thermal cut out to prevent the element from
over-heating. If this occurs brush the air intake grille (positioned on the back of the fan
heater box). After a longer period of time the blades of the fan may also need to be
carefully brushed. This should be carried out by a qualified person.
