Control Panel
Buttons/Keys
RESET: Resets printer when printer is offline or in a PAUSE mode.
SELECT/(RESET): Toggles printer between selections when in SET-UP mode.
ALT/(RESET): Alternates between functions. Press this button with one of the
following: SETUP, LOAD or MICRO LF.
ONLINE: Toggles printer between online and offline mode. If pressed when unit
is "ON-LINE: BUSY" allows the printer to pause until button is pressed again.
FF (Form Feed): Advances paper to top of next form.
LF (Line Feed): Advances one line at a time. Continuous holding of this button
advances paper to top of next form.
SETUP/(ONLINE): Puts printer in SET-UP mode when pressed simultaneously
with ALT/(RESET) button.
LOAD/(FF): Allows paper to load in printer when pressed simultaneously with
ALT/(RESET) button. Paper will automatically stop at the top of form. To unload
continuous form feed sheets select this button with ALT/(RESET) button.
MICRO LF/(LF): Displays "MICRO LF MODE" when pressed simultaneously
with ALT/(RESET) button. Use the FF (page down) or LF (page up) buttons to
move paper in 1/180 inch increments.
EXIT/(ONLINE): Exits SET-UP mode and returns to "ON-LINE READY" status.
FUNCTION/(FF): Toggles from item to item (within an item field) or stops and
starts an operation.
ITEM/(LF): Toggles from item to item (within an item field) or stops and starts an
operation.
SELECT/(RESET): Toggles from option to option (within optional fields) or
starts and stops an operation.
Self-test
1. When unit is turned on ensure unit is displaying "ON LINE and READY" in the
control panel window.
2. Ensure bail lever is closed.
3. Press the ON LINE and RESET buttons simultaneously until control panel
window diplays FUNCTN:STYLE.
4. Press the FF button four times until control panel window displays
FUNCTION:SELF TST.
5. Press the RESET button to begin the self-test.
6. The control panel window will then display SELF TEST PRINT.
Hex Dump Test
1. Press the SELECT button until FUNCTN:HEX DUMP appears in the control
panel window which will then display HEX DUMP:READY.
2. Start up the host system. The control panel window will display HEX
DUMP:BUSY and the printer will print a hexadecimal dump listing.
3. To stop printing, press either the SELECT or ITEM button and the display will
reflect "PAUSE" and can be re-started by depressing either button.
4. Stop the host system when necessary data has printed out.
5. Press the FUNCTION button to return printer to optional SET-UP modes.
Cover Removal
1. Remove cut sheet feeder (if mounted):
a. Disconnect cut sheet feeder cable.
b. Remove output stacker (if applicable).
c. Remove front cover.
d. Remove acoustic cover.
e. Move printhead all the way to left position.
f. Carefully lift and remove cut sheet feeder.
2. Remove platen knobs by carefully pulling each knob out toward you.
3. Remove acoustic cover (if stacker was attached acoustic cover will already be
removed) and front cover:
a. Turn acoustic cover until it is positioned at a right angle.
b. Carefully push right tabs towards the center, bending it just enough to
release stud from hole. Follow same procedure with left tab and care-
fully remove acoustic cover.
c. Pull front cover toward you at a 30 degree angle off the unit.
d. Pull cover straight up towards you.
4. Remove cut sheet guide, top cover and rear cover:
a. Pull sheet guide straight out of unit in a upward motion.
b. Unlock catches from the rear cover by pulling front edge of top cover
towards you.
c. Unlock two hooks at rear of top cover and remove.
d. Lift the rear cover up at a 30 degree angle from unit.
e. Remove cover by pulling straight up toward you.
5. Remove operator panel:
a. Release the hooks from these slots by carefully pushing the two tabs.
b. Remove operator panel assembly by pushing it upward toward you.
c. Unplug cable from operator panel.
6. Remove upper cover:
a. Remove ribbon cassette
b. Paper release lever should be positioned in continuous paper mode.
c. Set bail lever in the open position (lever should be pulled toward you).
d. Locate and loosen two mounting screws at the rear of upper cover.
e. Lift rear part of the upper cover approximately 1 to 2 inches at 20
degree angle.
f. Position upper cover where you can release studs from slots on bottom
cover.
g. Remove upper cover by lifting upward.

Initializing Interface Module
1. Turn on power while simultaneously pressing RESET button. The message
INITIALIZE PCB will appear on the display.
2. Press RESET button again and the message SAVING NOW!! will appear.
Serial Interface Requirements
Configuration adjustments are executed through control panel buttons.
Error Codes
Common Problems and Fixes
Power lamp not working:
1. Check power switch and power source.
2. Check operator panel.
3. Check AC fuse.
4. Check connections on PC board.
5. Remove and check AC inlet.
6. Check voltage selector jumper setting.
7. Check for defective interface board.
Power lamp working, but printhead not operational:
1. Check connectors from PC board to power unit.
2. Check mounting on PC and interface boards.
3. Turn power off to unit, unplug interface cable and re-start unit. If unit
responds check host system and cabling between host and printer. If unit
doesn't respond check DC voltage.
4. If message on display is "COVER OPEN ERROR" then check DC voltage:
a. Ensure top cover is closed.
b. Push the interlock switch. If "PRINT: OFF LINE" appears on display,
the interlock mechanism, cover or interlock assembly may be defective.
5. Check the interlock switch cable and for a possible short circuit.
Paper out error:
1. Set forms to continuous paper mode.
2. Check paper end detect mechanism.
3. Check the paper end switch assembly, cable and for a possible short circuit.
Feeder error:
1. Check main PC board.
2. Check cut sheet feeder.
Power lamp is working, but unit will not print:
1. If unit display shows "ON LINE: READY":
a. Check RS-232C interface cable.
b. Check interface cable.
c. Check for proper protocol selection.
d. Check for proper baud rate selection.
e. Check for proper data length selection.
f. Check for data format.
2. If unit display shows "PAPER OUT ERROR" follow "Paper out error" guide-
lines.
3. If unit display shows "FEEDER ERROR" follow "Feeder error" guidelines.
4. If unit display shows "ROM SUM" or "RAM R/W?":
a. Check main PC board.
b. Check interface board.
5. If unit display shows "DRIVER ALARM":
a. Check main PC board.
b. Check interface board.
6. If unit display shows "POWER ALARM":
a. Check power supply.
b. Check main PC board.
c. Check carriage motor.
d. Check paper feed motor.
7. If unit display shows "LEFT END ALARM":
a. Check carriage motor (ensure it is plugged in).
b. Check left end sensor.
c. Check PC board.
d. Check for melted fuse.
8. If the Centronic interface is selected then check the cable and cable con-
nections. If centronics cable is not selected then follow procedures for
checking DC voltage.
Unit not printing with display showing "ON LINE: BUSY ON LCD":
1. Check RS-232C interface cable.
2. Check interface cable.
3. Check for proper protocol selection.
4. Check for proper baud rate selection.
5. Check for proper data length selection.
6. Check for data format.
7. Follow procedures for checking DC voltage.
Bad print quality:
1. Check form thickness control quality.
2. Check adjustment on printhead.
3. Check to see that ribbon cassette is set properly.
4. Check ribbon for wear as well as ink density.
5. Check to see how ribbon is feeding through unit.
6. Check color mixing (if applicable).
7. Check the forms feed operation.
8. Check connection on interface cable.
9. Check for correct mode selection.
10. Check all connections on main PC board and power supply.
Bad color mixing in print quality:
1. Ensure ribbon cassette is mounted correctly.
2. Check paper thickness lever.
3. Check relation of shift lever and ribbon guide for proper settings.
4. Check adjustment on shift motor stopper.
5. Check shift belt adjustment.
6. Check ribbon guide height.
7. Check the shift motor.
Bad forms feed operation:
1. Check main PC and interface boards.
2. Check line feed motor.
3. Check wiring connected to line feed motor.
Intermittent form feeding problems:
1. Check positioning of forms.
2. Check platen gear backlash adjustment.
3. Ensure path has no obstructions.
4. Check main PC board.
5. Check line feed motor.
6. Check platen unit and other forms feed mechanism.

Cover Door Open Front cover is open.
Paper Out Error Unit is out of paper.
Feeder Error Either printer is out of paper or has jammed in unit.
Set Friction Mode Cut Sheet Feeder is being used with paper release
lever set to continuous.
Open Paper Bail Paper bail is closed while auto-load switch has been
engaged.
Parity Error Printer has received incorrect data.
1. Check parameters of "FORMAT" or "BAUD RT"
2. Check Interface cable.
Framing Error Printer has sent information with incorrect data.
1. Check parameters of "FORMAT" or "BAUD RT".
2. Check interface cable.
Over-Flow Error Input buffer has overflowed.
1. Check parameters of "PROTOCOL", "FORMAT"
or "BAUD RT".
2. Check Interface cable.
Modem Error Printer has received data with bad modem control
signal.
1. Check parameter of "CONTROL".
2. Check Interface cable.
ROM Sum Error or RAM
R/W Error Error has been detected on either RAM or ROM
memory.
Down Load Error Down load data format is incorrect.
Drive Alarm, Power Alarm
or Left End Alarm These are warning indicators of possible mechanical
problems.

General Information
AC Fuse Replacement:
1. Disconnect Power cord.
2. Loosen fuse connector located next to power supply inlet by turning fuse
socket counter clockwise.
3. Replace fuse and re-install fuse socket holder.
